Michael John McGahey

{Michael John McGahey}

Born in 1873 at Portsae, Hampshire, England he grew up in Stepcote Hill, Exeter. He went to Heles School and started work with Dunn & Baker solicitors as a junior clerk. One of the senior partners took an interest in him and helped him through night school and gave him a partnership with the firm. He had a paper round to pay for night school. He passed his law exams with first class honors and became a leading advocate of the day in the west of England. A Freeman and Alderman of the city of Exeter and for twenty years the Chairman of Exeter City Football Club. He naturely went with the club and reported on the tour for the Express and Echo, which was reprint in the 1990's. The reports were

On Tueday the 22nd August 1944 while staying at his son Edgar's house, and the family were away on holiday he past away aged 71. The paper reported that day and a second report the following Thursday:-

Death Of Mr. M. J. McGahey At Exeter

The "Express & Echo" reports with regret the death last night of Mr. M. J. McGahey, well-known scolictor, elderman of the city council, and president of Exeter City Football club. The news comes as a great shock to numerous friends and accquaintences throughout Devon, for Mr McGahey, who has been active to the last, was a familiar figure and a man of many interests. As an advocate in the law courts he had few equals in the west of England. He also rendered grand service to his native city of Exeter in several spheres.

McGahey,---On August 22nd 1944, Michael John McGahey, aged 71 years. Private cremation tommorow (Friday), August 25th. Memorial service Exeter Cathedral at 12 noon Friday. No flowers, no morning.

Winifred De Viell

{Winifred Emma De Viell}

The daughter of John De Viell, a works Manager. She was born on the 21th April 1900. She served with the RAF during the second World War, and then worked for Dunn & Baker. She married John Michael McGahey in 1922 and they had five children. Following his death in 1944, she married Fred Homes, an Aeronautical Engineer, in 1949 but was widowed again in 1969. Following his death she remained living in Sidmouth, to where they had recently moved, but she moved to Witheridge Devon some ten or twelve years before her death. she died on the 26th March 1997.
